I know that I love the book. Where else does God just show off over and over. He is all about Himself and His power.
It also comforts me to know that hard times are sometimes straight from God. He pointed Job out to Satan. He cares more about the shaping of our character than the cuddling of our comfort. I also like the way it ended. God brought abundance in response to Job's submission and obedience. (and Job didn't get it right the whole time, either.)
Amen to Graced too - she's right on with that. It's one my favorite books too! I know, suffering is so enjoyable to read about and all, that that's probably everyone's go-to Bible story! :-) My favorite interpretation of it is in Michael Card's Job Suite, and esp. the lyrics/verse where Job finally gets it - "I place my hand over my mouth." Even a godly, wise man who seemed to be nearly perfect, still tried to figure God out - what a waste of time when we do that. The "where were you when I..." questions finally hit him I think and he realized his humanity and God's incredible, sovereign deity. It's also a great reminder when I want to whine, 'Well, that is just NOT fair!' - my life REALLY isn't too bad at all.
Hey Abbey -
Just heard Don Miller talk a little about Job, and I thought you might like what he said:
"The Bible begins with the book of Job, it's the oldest book of the Bible. . . . and it's as if God is saying, 'Okay, before we get started, life is going to be really hard and odd and difficult. You're going to have questions. Here's the issue: you're mind is really so finite and small that I can't give you the answer--you wouldn't understand. Just trust me.' That seems to be the point. Job's questions are never answered in the text--not directly. He says, 'God, why is this happening?' and God says, 'I store the snow in Wichita every winter.' . . . What is God saying? God is saying essentially this, 'Don, you make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I'll run the cosmos.'"
I thought it was helpful. Looking forward to seeing you guys next month--and adding to the empire of The Donald!
Alf...we love Donald Miller! Did you go hear him speak somewhere?
He always puts things on a level that makes sense to me. Thanks for sharing.
