What a freaking hard day. I hated today and loved today all in one big package, which I am begrudgingly learning is part of who I am at this point...ambivalent.
The happy news is this... I have a Lutong.
Thank you, Lutong, for letting me cry. For letting me talk. For letting me call. For letting me not even ask how your day was. For letting me have that kind of day and love me regardless even though the selfishness in it is repulsive.
Thank you.
And I love you.
You are the best gift I've ever received.

what's a lutong, and where can I get one?
Lutongs taste really good when dipped in chocolate.
Nothing to do with Lutong - just wanted to say that Margaritas are on me next time we drive through B'ham!!
Aly
Here is something intresting...
Lu Tong was a famous poet in China.
Okay, I keep checking your blog to see WHEN you will tell us what a Lutong is. End the mystery! I'm going crazy.
The lutong is a tube zither of the Kenyah and Kayan people of Sarawak, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. It is a quiet instrument used by women to accompany singing, and occasionally to lead a longdance. It is made from a section of bamboo with the strings pulled up from the peel, stretched taut by small sticks, and held in place by a braided piece of rattan at either end. There are usually only four strings that extend the length of the tube. There is a story told by the locals that if a man plays this instrument, he will be attacked by a tiger. The instrument shown was collected at a Kayan village in the middle Baram River system.
how bizzzzaaaare. I googled lutong, and this is what I got. sorry for the long comment. again. I can totally see you sitting playin' a 4 stringed tubey instrument to relax. you're so cool.
Abbey, is this the Lutong that you are referring to? I, too, googled Lutong and got a whole bunch of Asian cooking stuff and the poet guy. I didn't see anything about an instrument. WHAT IS IT? Are you referring to a pretend word to cover up something else? Do you like to play a Lutong? Are you going crazy and enjoy talking to an instrument or Lutong food? I must know. MUST KNOW. I'll check back later.
Hee Hee... this is fun!
Yes, Kim...you are correct...kinda. I'm using the word Lutong in a way all of my own, and it's an extremely long story. (Although I would love to play that feminist instument once in awhile! I would maybe even plant it in some particular men's path, secretly hoping they might pick it up to play and one day be eaten by a tiger! WHat a great instument!) Sad, but true...
No really, Lutong is a name I call one of my good friends. It's a word we got out of a novel. Of course we spell and pronounce it wrong, so it is in that way a new word, but....it derives (in the novel anyway) from an ancient oriental tradition that two women would be "assigned" each other to be lutongs. which meant they would "have each other's backs" so to speak, for life. They were very close becasue they weren't treated well by men, so lutongs were in some ways a survival for women. They even had their own secret language that only they could understand. There's lots more to it, but that's the quick thought about Lutong. It's a made up word, so googling won't help, but it has a very true meaning to us!!
Thats so nice. I'm thankful for the lutongs in my life too!
Much relieved. No wonder you were worried about me enjoying it dipped in chocolate. hmmm...
Thanks for relieving my hysterical curiosity.
OK, THIS IS NOT RELATED TO LUTONGS AT ALL (WHICH SOUND AWESOME!) BUT I KEEP SEEING ALY'S COMMENTS ON HERE...IS THAT ALY OF "ALF AND ALIISON." B/C IF IT IS...I WANT HER TO COMMENT ON MY PAGE OR SOMETHING...I WANT TO SAY HEY. WE WENT TO THE RODEO ONCE WITH ALF IN MESQUITE. WHAT IS SHE UP TO? WHERE DOES SHE LIVE?
ABBEY, I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE WEATHER TO GET COOLER. I LOVE RUNNING OUTSIDE WHEN IT'S NOT 100 DEGREES AND YOU CAN SEE THE OZONE BREAKING DOWN BEFORE YOUR EYES.
wow! glad the mystery is solved. funny I kind of read between the lines and figured out your meaning of lutong. glad to know i was right. :) funny that there's other meanings to your sacred made-up word.
And squeaky, yeah ... that's the aly of alf and allison. she's a lurker. maybe one day she'll join the blogging crowd as a contributor. i think she's scared of the water. who wouldn't be?
THANK you, for clearing that up. I too, had apparently guessed right on the meaning, and man, who knew it could have so many other definitions... Aly is probably truly scared of the blog/pregnancy epidemic, and must be chicken. And, that "chicken" was just for Alf.
We just got DSL!!! Should I say anymore? Squeaky, I tried to comment on yours along time ago and I could'nt for some reason - I feel the love though
Allison - the lurker
Hey Abbey, thanks for letting me use your blog :)
Okay- I am so going through abbey withdrawals1 You haven't blogged in forever and I haven't seen you at church lately...and just knowing your not going this weekend is making me even more crazy! Enjoy your trip...your hubby..and your peace and quiet!
Anne of Green Gables must have taken you away. Probably to the haunted wood. Have a good time with her and tell her I said "hi".
So pardon my coming in on this a month later, but...this was a very interesting post and the comments that insued were hilarious!
Kim illuded to this being from Anne of Green Gables. I haven't read it since Missy and her sister were young(er), so I can't say I recall the word in that book.
So pray tell, what's the novel? Sounds interesting.
